The dhow, a symbol of East African culture, has long been integral to Zanzibar, carrying people, goods, and treasures across its waters for centuries. Today, the Dhow Palace continues this legacy as a meeting point for people and cultures worldwide, surrounded by décor and artifacts reminiscent of a bygone era.
Originally built as the home of a wealthy merchant, Sheikh bin Mujbia, the Dhow Palace remained in his family for over three centuries before being sold. Located in the heart of Stone Town, the building has witnessed many significant events in Zanzibar’s history. Its transformation from a family mansion to an elegant hotel in 1993 brought it into the spotlight, further enhanced by the addition of a new wing in 2005.
The Dhow Palace is best described as a living museum, showcasing exquisite furniture, art, and oriental ornaments that have graced Zanzibar’s shores over the centuries.
The hotel features 37 rooms of various sizes and levels of comfort, all with en suite facilities. Most rooms include balconies offering views of either the beach or the hotel’s courtyard pool. Decorated and furnished in Swahili style with antique furniture and ornaments, the hotel exudes unique character. However, some beds may be taller or shorter than typical Western standards. Each room is well-equipped by Tanzanian standards, featuring air conditioning, a fridge, satellite television, and a telephone. While some rooms are compact, guests may request a room change during less busy periods. Additional amenities include an internet café, Wi-Fi access, and a laundry service available for an extra charge.
The hotel overlooks the town’s beach, which is suitable for sunbathing and swimming but is lively, public, and less pristine than other Zanzibar beaches. It provides a wonderful setting to observe Stone Town life, particularly during breakfast served at the hotel’s beachside restaurant. For a more relaxing experience, the hotel’s well-maintained courtyard pool offers an ideal spot for a refreshing swim after a day of exploring the warm and bustling streets of Stone Town.
