Our Kilimanjaro guides leading trekkers up the mountain.

Once on the Mountain, your well equipped guides and porters will rank second only to your mental determination, in terms of important factors contributing to a successful summit attempt. For the duration of your Kilimanjaro trek, your guide will be your advisor, he will lead you to the summit, and he will bring down safely again. It will be important that you work closely with him and take note of his advice.

Qualified and experienced guides

Guides are compulsory for all routes on Kilimanjaro. All our treks up the mountain are lead by highly trained and qualified guides, registered with the Kilimanjaro National Parks Board. Each of our guides has been selected over years, based on experience, safety record and through feedback from previous clients. Over the years they made a major contribution to our proud success rate of 96%+ and have safely guided in excess of 14 000 successful Climbing Kilimanjaro clients to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Support staff ratios

The average ratio of our support staff to climbers is 2 to 3 porters per hiker and two guides for a maximum of 4 hikers. This excellent staff to clients ratio, bolstered by our superior support equipment, will ensure your safety and enjoyment on the mountain.

Porters and cook

The porters do not only transport your gear and the supplies up and down the mountain. Arriving at every camp site long before you, they will have already erected your tent on your arrival. In the evening they will also boil drinking and washing water and the cook will prepare dinner of a quality that has surprised many previous clients.

Weight limits for porters

Remember that there is a weight limit of 15 kg (32 lbs) per climber, on the gear of each hiker to be portered. A soft duffel bag (barrel type) is preferred – a rucksack is not necessary as they prefer to porter the loads balanced on their heads and shoulders.

This is a “compulsory tradition” on every Kilimanjaro climb. We recommend giving a tip of between US $ 190 to US $ 250 per climber to the mountain crew at the end of the climb. The exact tipping amount depends on group size and how many days were spend on the mountain. We recommend giving the tip to the main guide who will then distribute the tip among the mountain crew. We recommend not paying any tips until you and all your gear have descended from the mountain.

The average recommended tip per group per day:

  • Chief guide – US $ 20 per chief guide per day from the group
  • Assistant Guide – US $ 12 per assistant guide per day from the group
  • Cook – US $ 8 per cook per day from the group
  • Porters – US $ 6 per porter per day from the group

It is recommended not to pay your porters any tips until you and all your gear have descended from the mountain.

More on becoming a guide on Kilimanjaro

Qualifying as a Kilimanjaro guide brings with it great prestige and respect within the local community. Bearing in mind that your guide would have been employed as a porter for at least 3 years after which he would have been trained and employed as an assistant guide for at least a further 2 years. Only then did he earn an opportunity to become a registered guide, provided that he was found suitable and competent. On average guides and porters will do three (5 – 6 day) summit expeditions per month. That equates to between 15 – 18 days per month on the mountain!

Experience African Safari Guides
We were one of the first safari operators in Tanzania to insist on Tanzanian guides, because it simply didn’t make any sense to explore the Serengeti with European or South African guides.

Best decision we ever made! In addition to superior wildlife spotting skills, our team of African safari guides offers local insight that can’t be found in guide books.
Your senior naturalist guides are all Tanzanian, born and raised, and have a minimum of 10 years experience in the field.
More than leaders, spotters, and wildlife experts, our safari guides are diplomats – true ambassadors for Tanzania. They can’t wait to share their country’s treasures with you.

Raja Telack
Head Guide
Raja has worked in various roles for over 15 years. He is passionate about Tanzania’s history and its people, and has a keen eye for spotting elusive wildlife. Raja believes that no matter how much you know, there’s always more to learn. His charm and wit capture traveler’s right from the start.
“We were very impressed with Raja’s deep respect for the people of Tanzania and for all the animals in this beautiful country. He shared his knowledge and insights and was so able and willing to anticipate where to position our vehicle for the best viewing. Our thanks for his leadership and daily scheduling! We enjoyed being with him – always so nice and polite.” – From Sandy California USA

Emmanuel mollel
Head Guide
Emmanuel has worked as a guide in Tanzania for more than 10 years. His extensive experience makes guests feel secure deep in the African wilderness. The moment you meet him, you know you’re in good hands.
“Emmanuel is amazing. Tour guides make or break a trip and I cannot say enough wonderful things about him. From the moment he picked me up in Arusha, I was enamored with him. His keen eyes found every lazy lounging leopard in a tree and the amount of knowledge he has is admirable. Any group would be lucky to have Emmanuel as their guide.” – Paul and Erika UK

Innocent Chalamila
Head Guide
Innocent has been taking our travelers into the bush for more than 12 years. His prior experience as a senior ranger in northern and southern parks makes him an excellent travel partner. Travelers appreciate his enthusiasm for African wildlife and his stellar tracking skills.
“I have always dreamed of coming to Africa.  I could not imagine a better person than Innocent to show me the animals, share the culture, keep us safe and laugh with.  He is a great man and I will always remember him!  How he can spot a leopard in a tree is astounding!  You have a great group of people working here.” From Beatrice and Marco Australia

Charles Babu
Head Guide
Babu easygoing nature, extensive knowledge, and great sense of humor make him an excellent travel partner. He’s happy to answer any questions—so don’t be afraid to tell him what’s on your mind.
“Babu was the BEST – ever. We were so happy to have him. He is knowledgeable, courteous, polite, mannerly, always willing to go the extra step and mile. He made the trip so pleasant!  He has to be one of your number one guides!  He never let up – he worked every minute with us.” – Amit family from Canada

George Le babu
Head Guide
George, born and raised in Arusha, descends from the Maasai tribe. He is knowledgeable about the oral history of the Maasai people and delights in sharing his knowledge with travelers. His gregarious nature makes him a fun travel partner. And, he’s easy to pick out of a crowd—he’s so tall!
“There were only 7 of us, and we couldn’t have been more different. I know it had to be a challenge to manage us. George was incredible! He is so professional and patient! He is very good at handling all types of people and situations. He also made this safari very fun and a great learning experience! I know much more than I would have imagined. Asante sana!” – Werner from German

Last Minute Travel

Planning a last minute trip?
Here are 10 things to know if you are booking a trip with Africa Joy Tours within 3 months of departure:

1. Booking Forms

You’ll have to take a couple of minutes to fill out a simple booking form and an information form. Just e-mail the completed forms to us, along with a copy of the issuing page your passport, and we will begin the process of securing space for you on the trip.

2. Final Payment

The other guests on the trip will have already paid their final invoices, so you will need to wire transfer within 48 hours of returning the Booking Forms.

3. Valid Passport

Is your passport valid for at least 6 months from your return date? If not, you’ll need to renew your passport immediately. You can do this for a fee at most US Post Offices.

4. Tanzania Visa

You’ll need a Tanzania tourist visa, and we’ll provide you with all those instructions. If you are booking within 60 days of the safari, you can get your visa upon arrival at the airport in Tanzania for $100 (USD).

5. No Required Vaccinations

There are no medical requirements for entry into Tanzania directly from Europe or North America, but the vast majority of our guests get anti-malarial pills and a yellow fever vaccination.

Talk to your travel doctor about what immunizations or medications might be appropriate for you. If you’re not sure where to find a travel doctor, most major hospitals have a travel clinic.

6. Travel Insurance

We do recommend that all our guests purchase travel insurance, and we can confidently recommend Travel Guard.

We’ve had great feedback from our guests about their services, and include their brochure in our information packet to you. To have a preliminary look at their coverage options, go to Travel Guard.

7. Packing List

Once your trip is confirmed, your predeparture consultant will send you a detailed packing list and preparation guide, so don’t worry about what to bring.

8. Duffel Bag

You will need to have a simple, soft-sided bag for your belongings; hard suitcases, bags with wheels and/or extra straps (like a backpack) are NOT permitted..

9. Flights

Please call us to discuss options for international flights to Tanzania.  Ask us about our competitive Business Class fares.   A copy of the issuing page of your passport is required for us to book airline reservations.

10. Money

All of your major expenses are covered while on safari. Tipping your safari guides and hotel staff is optional and is not included. Tipping suggestions vary by trip, but your predeparture consultant will help you with those estimates.

Credit cards are only accepted in larger hotels/shops, so you will also want to bring some cash for souvenirs, bar beverages, phone calls, etc. US Dollars are accepted everywhere and smaller bills are always appreciated. Your predeparture booklet will give you more specific information.

What Are the Entry Requirements for Tanzania?

Foreigners seeking to enter the United Republic of Tanzania should be in possession of a valid passport, at least six months prior to expiration. The passport is to be presented to the Immigration Control Officer at any entry point: border station, airport, harbor. The passport must be presented along with one of the following:

  • A valid visa
  • Resident permit
  • A pass

A visitor must also present an onward or return ticket together with proof that the visitor has sufficient funds to support himself or herself while in Tanzania.

All foreigners from non-Commonwealth countries are required to have a valid visa unless their countries have agreements with Tanzania under which the visa requirement is waived. Exemptions: Citizens of Commonwealth countries are not required to obtain visas unless they are citizens of the United Kingdom, Canada, Nigeria, or India. The visa is permission granted to a foreigner who intends to travel to Tanzania on business, for a holiday, to study or conduct research, or for other approved activities. When entering Tanzania, the visitor with a visa may then obtain from the immigration control officer, a pass or any other authority to enter the country.

Visas are issued by the following:

  • The office of the Director of Immigration Services, Dar es Salaam, and the office of the Principal Immigration Officer, Zanzibar.
  • Tanzanian representatives abroad: Visas can be obtained at Tanzanian Embassies and High Commissions, such as the Tanzanian Embassy of the United States.
  • Entry points to the United Republic of Tanzania: principally Namanga, Tunduma, Sirari, Horohoro, Kigoma port, Dar es Salaam International Airport, Kilimanjaro International Airport, Zanzibar Harbour and Zanzibar Airport.
  • Any other gazetted entry point.

At Kilimanjaro Airport, passengers disembark their flights outside on the tarmac. Upon entering the airport (which would be from the left side of the photo), there is one line for visitors who have their visas and one line for visitors who need to purchase their visas.

To avoid potential loss of passports in the mail or delays in visa processing, Ultimate Kilimanjaro® recommends that US citizens obtain their visas upon arrival, at Kilimanjaro International Airport. It is an easy and simple process. The cost of a Tanzanian visa for US citizens is $100, payable in US dollars.

Canadian, Australian, British and most European passport holders can also obtain visas upon arrival at the airport. The cost of a Tanzanian visa is $50, payable in US dollars. Confirm with your embassy.
