This 10 Days Great Wildebeest Migration itinerary is designed to place you at the heart of one of Earth’s most spectacular natural events. You will spend four nights in the Serengeti, giving you ample time to explore its vast plains. Additionally, you will follow the migration as it moves through the northern Serengeti from August to October, offering unforgettable wildlife encounters.

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha: 10 days Great Wildebeest Migration

An Africa Joy Tours representative will meet you at the airport and drive you to your lodge. You can relax, unwind, and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

In the morning, your private safari guide will collect you from your lodge. You will travel on a smooth tarmac road across open Masai plains dotted with acacia trees. Along the way, you will see Masai people walking, herding cattle, or riding bicycles.

Tarangire National Park is famous for its massive elephant herds and diverse wildlife. From the open roof of your jeep, you will view seasonal swamps, savannah, and the life-giving Tarangire River. Expect to see zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, and possibly lions or leopards. After a rewarding game drive, you will head to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Central Serengeti National Park (Seronera)

After breakfast, you will travel toward the fertile highlands where the Iraqw people farm wheat and corn. As you continue, you will pass through the misty rainforests of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where baboons, leopards, and elephants may appear.

You will enjoy a stunning view of the Ngorongoro Crater before continuing to the Serengeti, reaching the park by midday. The Serengeti offers varied landscapes, including grassy plains, swamps, lakes, savannah, and mountains. Following an exciting game drive, you will head to your camp for dinner and rest.

Day 4: North Serengeti – Following the Migration

This morning, you will begin a game drive toward the Northern Serengeti. The region stretches from Seronera for about 100 km and features rolling hills, small rivers, and scenic kopjes. It supports a large resident wildlife population and boasts unique geological formations like the Lobo Kopje.

Because this area is far from the main southern entry gate, it receives fewer visitors, creating a more intimate wildlife experience. During August to October, the migration moves through this region. With luck, you may witness dramatic Mara River crossings where wildebeest battle strong currents and crocodiles. After a full day, you will retire to your camp for dinner beneath the star-filled African sky.

Day 5: North Serengeti

After an early breakfast, you will venture out to maximize your chances of seeing a river crossing. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather at the riverbank, hesitating until one brave animal leaps first. Once it does, the entire herd surges forward. Those that survive the crocodiles and currents enjoy the lush grasslands of the Masai Mara.

You will continue exploring throughout the day before returning to camp.

Day 6: Central Serengeti

This morning, you will return to Seronera for more opportunities to witness the Serengeti’s abundant wildlife. After another rewarding game drive, you will settle into camp for dinner and a relaxing evening under the expansive African sky.

Day 7: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast, you will enjoy a final Serengeti game drive before traveling to the Ngorongoro Crater. When you arrive at the rim, you will have your first breathtaking view of the crater floor, with its streams, grasslands, and wildlife. You will overnight at a lodge near the rim.

Day 8: Ngorongoro Crater

Early in the morning, you will descend into the crater for a full day of wildlife viewing. This remarkable caldera, formed three million years ago by a massive volcanic eruption, is now home to an enclosed ecosystem teeming with wildlife. It is one of the best places in Africa to spot the Big Five, along with wildebeest, gazelles, reedbuck, and over 500 bird species.

You will enjoy a picnic lunch near the hippo pool before ascending the crater wall and heading to Karatu for an overnight stay.

Day 9: Lake Manyara National Park to Arusha

After breakfast, you will drive to Lake Manyara National Park. Although small, the park is incredibly diverse. Its shallow salt lake covers much of the surface and attracts thousands of flamingos and over 500 bird species.

While exploring, you may spot monkeys, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, elephants, and if fortunate tree-climbing lions. After lunch, you will drive back to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon.
