9-Day Trip: Climbing Kilimanjaro via the Challenging 6-Day Rongai Route

The Climbing Kilimanjaro via Rongai Route is especially popular among experienced climbers. It is the only route to the summit of Kilimanjaro that begins on the northern side, near the Kenyan border. The northern side is windier and drier, resulting in less vegetation and expansive views of the beautiful Kenyan landscape.

The descent is via the Marangu Route (on the south side), allowing you to experience both sides of Kilimanjaro. The entire ascent, including descent, via the Rongai Route takes six days. If desired, you can add an extra day of trekking, which is highly recommended. This additional day gives your body more time to adjust to the altitude, increasing your chances of reaching the summit without encountering altitude sickness.

Fitness Requirements for the Climbing Kilimanjaro via Rongai Route

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a challenging experience due to the altitude, rate of ascent, and varying temperatures. On average, you’ll be hiking six to seven hours per day. If you’re in good health and fitness, this trek is absolutely achievable with proper preparation.

Here are some tips to maximize your chances of reaching the summit and enjoying the trek:

  • Take Your Time: It’s important not to rush. Hiking at a steady pace allows your body to acclimatize properly.
  • Prepare in Advance: Being in good physical shape makes the climb significantly easier. Go hiking a few months before your trip, with multi-day hikes being especially beneficial. Running and aerobic exercises are also great preparation.
  • Add an Extra Day: Altitude sickness can be unpredictable. By adding an extra day to your climb, you allow your body more time to adjust, which significantly reduces the risk of altitude sickness and increases your chances of reaching the summit.
