The 7 Days Best of Mikumi-Nyerere safari explores Tanzania’s most remarkable southern circuit parks. This adventure includes thrilling game drives in Mikumi National Park, a boat safari along the Rufiji River in Nyerere National Park, and relaxing moments on Kilwa Beach. Along the way, you will visit historic sites like Kilwa Masoko and Kilwa Kisiwani before returning to Dar es Salaam. Lodges along the route provide comfortable overnight stays and local cuisine to complete your experience.
Your safari begins with a 6:00 am pickup in Dar es Salaam. You will drive six hours to Mikumi National Park, stopping in Morogoro for a hot lunch. Upon arrival, embark on an afternoon game drive where you may see herds of impala, elephants, Masai giraffes, lions, wildebeests, buffaloes, and many other animals. In the evening, enjoy dinner and overnight at Camp Bastian.
After breakfast, set off for a full-day game drive with a packed lunch. Mikumi is home to lions, elands, hartebeest, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, and elephants. Stop at a hippo and crocodile pool for observation and photographs. Return to Camp Bastian for dinner and overnight.
At 6:30 am, you will depart the lodge and drive to Nyerere National Park. Enjoy lunch along the way before arriving at your lodge in the late afternoon. Later, embark on an evening boat safari along the Rufiji River to spot hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species. Dinner and overnight stay at Selous Safari Lodge.
After breakfast, depart on a game drive with packed lunch. Nyerere National Park offers opportunities to see lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, and hyenas. Additionally, you will discover diverse birdlife and varied landscapes, including wetlands, dry grasslands, acacia forests, and elevated areas with expansive mountain views. Return to the lodge in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, drive to Kilwa Beach with lunch boxes for the journey. Your lodge on the Indian Ocean allows for a relaxing afternoon—explore the fish market, stroll along the beach, or unwind at leisure. Dinner and overnight at Kilwa Beach Lodge on a full-board basis.
Depart after breakfast with a picnic lunch for Kilwa Kisiwani, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Discover the Swahili stone town where Arabs once minted gold, traded spices and jewelry, and held lively gatherings under the moonlight. Visit the nearby Songo Mnara island, a smaller Swahili settlement offering insights into early Swahili architecture. Return to Kilwa Beach Lodge for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, transfer back to Dar es Salaam with a packed lunch. Along the way, enjoy scenic views of southern Tanzania. You will be dropped off at your hotel, airport, or ferry terminal, concluding your 7 Days Best of Mikumi-Nyerere safari with unforgettable memories of wildlife, history, and coastal beauty.

This 3-day mid-range safari package is designed to offer our clients an intense taste of what Tanzania has to offer. We will experience all the excitement of an African wildlife safari in the most spectacular of landscapes. On this safari, we’ll visit Tarangire National Park, renowned for its elephant families and iconic baobab trees. Roaming onwards we experience the jewel that is Ngorongoro Crater, breathtakingly beautiful, and the best place in Tanzania to see the Big Five.
You will be picked up from the airport by a Africa Joy Tours representative and conveyed to your accommodation in Arusha. Here you will overnight, relax, and prepare in anticipation of the adventures to come. Our partner lodge, the Arusha Planet Lodge, is an oasis of calm and aesthetic pleasure.
Midrange: Arusha Planet Lodge
Meals & Drinks: at own expense
Our safari guide will collect you from the lodge in Arusha for the drive to Tarangire National Park (approximately 2 hours). Tarangire, best known for its elephant families, savannah, iconic baobab trees, and seasonal swamps, is home to the life-giving Tarangire River. Animals gather at the river and giraffes, bushbuck, and hartebeest are often seen. The park is also home to buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest. These animals are closely attended by a range of predators, our Panthera friends, lion, and leopard. From the open roof of the truck, we will have the opportunity to absorb the landscapes and view the wildlife.
After a full day in the park, we will drive to the excellently appointed lodge (Karatu). Here we will enjoy dinner in the aesthetically delightful restaurant, relax, and spend the night in her capacious rooms.

Rise and shine! It’s an early departure for us today to the lush highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the seven wonders of Africa. Once we have reached the crater rim, we rumble down a steep track into the 600 m deep caldera, noting our passage through several climatic zones, to see a range of animals and birds. The caldera (collapsed volcano) is home to over 25,000 mammals ranging from the “Big Five”, lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard, to hippo, wildebeest, zebra, hyena, and more than 500 species of birds.
After an extensive game drive and a picnic lunch in the crater, we will return to Arusha arriving early in the evening.
