Itinerary Overview

A camping safari in Tanzania offers one of the most authentic ways to experience the wilderness, where every day is filled with adventure, discovery, and the raw beauty of nature. Among the highlights of this 6-day journey is the chance to witness the spectacular Great Wildebeest Migration calving season, which takes place between late January and early March in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area. During this period, more than 400,000 calves are born within a few weeks, transforming the grassy plains into a lively nursery filled with newborn wildebeest.

It is estimated that nearly 8,000 calves are born each day, an astonishing spectacle that also draws predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas. While many calves fall prey, the synchronized birthing serves as a survival strategy there are simply too many for predators to consume them all. For travelers, this creates some of the most thrilling game viewing opportunities imaginable, with dramatic predator-prey interactions unfolding in real time.

The herds are drawn to the fertile soils and fresh grasses of the Southern Serengeti Plains and Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which provide vital nutrients transferred from mother to calf through milk. Choosing a camping safari brings you closer to this action, as you sleep under canvas in public campsites, surrounded by the sounds of the wild. Nights are spent sharing stories around the campfire, while mornings begin with crisp air and the calls of birds echoing across the plains.

This 6-day camping safari is the perfect blend of adventure and immersion, offering a true taste of Tanzania’s wilderness. From the endless savannahs of the Serengeti to the breathtaking depths of the Ngorongoro Crater, this journey captures the very essence of African safari life.
