Restricted Areas for Self Drive in Tanzania
Home » Restricted Areas for Self Drive in Tanzania
Areas for which a Land Cruiser is required:
- Serengeti – the main road running from Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Naabi Hill gate and from the entrance to Seronera, is notorious among all tour guides in Tanzania for its condition. It’s a challenging road due to its rocky surface with washboard ribbons. We do allow self-drive safaris into the Serengeti but a Land Cruiser is required. We cannot stress enough to drive slowly (25km/h) and carefully on this road! Single vehicle rollovers are NOT covered by the insurance.
- Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The RAV4 is only allowed for safaris in the Ngorongoro Crater, the rest of the NCA is off limits.
- Road towards Lake Natron.
- Selous Game Reserve.
- Lake Tanganyika and Gombe Stream National Park. Western Tanzania lags behind the rest of the country in terms of economic development, and very few tourists make it to the far West. The road network is not well maintained and it is challenging to follow up adequately in case the car has a mechanical problem. Nevertheless, we do allow experienced and confident drivers to explore this area independently, but we need to be informed in advance. Alternatively, you can always explore this region with one of our drivers and enjoy an off the beaten track private safari.
Toyota RAV4
We do NOT allow Toyota RAV4s to drive in the above listed national parks. These restrictions are also listed in our rental Terms & Conditions. Through car trackers we can monitor if a car enters a restricted area.It means the hirer has breached the contract and would therefore be fully liable for any costs and loss of security bond.
