Budget Safaris

Tanzania is the ultimate safari destination. One-quarter of its land is protected within a network of parks and reserves. This encompasses a quartet of UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the world-renowned Serengeti National Park, the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater, the snow-capped Mt. Kilimanjaro, and the vast Nyerere National Park (formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve). Home to 20% of Africa’s wildlife, Tanzania boasts three distinct safari circuits. For budget safaris, the Northern circuit is the primary focus. It includes the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Arusha, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara National Parks. Offshore, the spice island of Zanzibar is the perfect way to conclude your journey. Spend a few days here, relaxing and snorkeling along its palm-lined beaches.

What is a Budget Safari?

A budget safari in Tanzania offers an authentic and unforgettable experience of getting close to animals in their natural habitat. Don’t be deterred by the term “budget” when searching for the perfect Tanzanian adventure. Opting for a budget safari doesn’t mean you’ll see fewer animals or receive subpar service. From my experience, our guide went above and beyond to ensure we encountered all of the Big Five – indeed, we did. As an experienced guide, he chose less-traveled routes, making our experience more intimate. You might be surprised by how busy the Serengeti can be, even during the off-peak season.

One characteristic of a budget safari in Tanzania is sharing the vehicle with other travelers. In contrast, you’d have a dedicated driver and car on a luxury safari. When you choose the budget option, expect to be joined by other enthusiastic safari-goers. Typically, a vehicle has six seats, so there will be no more than six individuals in one car.
