17 Day Ultimate Southern Africa Luxury Holiday
Home » 17 Day Ultimate Southern Africa Luxury Holiday
Experience the ultimate luxury journey in Southern Africa: beaches, winelands, Victoria Falls and a big game safari. Your amazing holiday starts with four days in Cape Town followed by a gourmet retreat in the Cape Winelands.
Then it’s on to an elegant hotel within walking distance of thundering Victoria Falls, and an incredible 3-day safari aboard the Zambezi Queen houseboat. Your journey ends with a Big 5 safari in the Sabi Sands Reserve, staying at an exclusive high-end lodge.
Day 1-4: Cape Town, Cape Point, Beaches & Table Mountain
Your holiday starts in one of the world’s most beautiful cities, Cape Town. There’s so much to see and do in this incredible destination: pick from two coastlines of white sand beaches, hike or take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain, visit Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 27 years) and see the penguins at Boulders Beach on your way to Cape Point – rightly named the “Cape of Good Hope”
Your accommodation in Cape Town is the One & Only. A destination unto itself, this urban chic waterfront resort is surrounded by views of both the harbour and Table Mountain. You couldn’t ask for a more convenient location: right in the world famous Victoria and Alfred Waterfront; an easy stroll from restaurants, cafes, excellent craft markets, boutique shops and the Two Oceans Aquarium.
Day 5-6: Fine Food & Wine in the Franschhoek Valley
Set against a backdrop of vine-covered slopes and mountain peaks, the pretty Cape Winelands town of Franshhoek is famous for its gourmet food and, of course, it’s vineyards and lovely wine. While staying at Le Quartier Francais we’d highly recommend dining at their award-winning restaurant, The Tasting Room. Here Chef Margot Janse presents a unique tasting menu of six or eight courses; the bold flavours perfectly paired with wines from the surrounding region.
There are plenty of interesting shops and galleries to explore too, while those who prefer to be active can choose between horse riding, hiking and mountain biking trails. A number of excellent golf courses lie within easy reach of Franschhoek, as does the Cape Winelands town of Stellenbosch with its oak-lined streets and historic Cape Dutch buildings.
Day 7: Four Seasons Hotel in Johannesburg
Upon landing in Johannesburg, you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel. That afternoon a registered private guide will take you for a half-day tour of Soweto – a suburb infused with the history of the struggle against apartheid and abuzz with energy.
Your accommodation for the evening is the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, its hillside setting affording spectacular views across the city. This luxurious hotel has recently undergone extensive renovations, and along with its spacious bedrooms (and super comfortable beds) has excellent facilities including Johannesburg’s leading day spa, and a choice of five restaurants ranging from a gourmet deli and casual bistro to contemporary fine dining.
Day 8-9: Stay a Short Walk from Victoria Falls
The Royal Livingstone sits on the Zambian the bank of the Zambezi River, a short walk from Victoria Falls. The largest sheet of falling water in the world, Victoria Falls throws up clouds of spray that can be seen from the deck of your riverside hotel (when water levels are high). Sip cocktails gazing out at this impressive sight while zebra graze on the hotel lawns. A private footpath leads you down for a closer view of the falls.
On arrival the first day, you’ll enjoy a relaxing sundowner cruise on the Zambezi River. The following day set off on a guided tour along the footpaths surrounding the falls, but to truly appreciate the sheer size of this natural wonder we’d highly recommend The Flight of Angels – a scenic helicopter flip.
Day 10-12: Luxury River Safari On Board the Zambezi Queen
This is Southern Africa’s ultimate luxury river safari experience and one that you’ll want to repeat over and over again. With unique game viewing opportunities, the Zambezi Queen allows you to relax in style as you take in the abundance of wildlife along the river edges.
During the day your guide takes you out in a small boat for close-up game viewing (no need for binoculars). You might even see a herd of elephant swimming across the Chobe River! Other activities offered include guided game drives in Chobe National Park, and catch-and-release fishing for tiger fish and bream. After toasting the fiery red sunset out on the river, sit down to a superb three-course dinner.
Day 13-16: Private Safaris & Game Drives in the Sabi Sands
Set on the banks of the Mabrak River in the Sabi Sands, adjacent to the world famous Kruger National Park, this quiet safari retreat has just six luxurious villas. Each villa is elegantly furnished and has a beautiful bathroom, while outside you’ll find your own wooden deck with a heated plunge pool and private view of the riverbed.
The highly skilled and entertaining ranger-and-tracker team will take you out to see the wonders of the bush on twice-daily game drives. This private Sabi Sands reserve is an excellent place to see Africa’s Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), and also offers up regular sightings of packs of wild dogs. In addition to game drives, you have the option of daily bush walks led by the lodge’s field guides.
Day 17: Back to Joburg for Your Flight Home
After a final lavish breakfast out on the deck you’re driven to the lodge’s private airstrip. You’re flown to Nelspruit Airport, where you connect with your flight back to Johannesburg and your onward travel arrangements.
