14 Day African Safari and Beach Holiday
This is a packed itinerary of 14 Day African Safari beginning with a day in Nairobi to visit the elephant orphanage and giraffe centre. It will be followed by a fantastic, 7-day safari taking the Elephant Trail through southeastern Kenya. You will visit Amboseli and the wilderness of Tsavo. After, you’ll head to the beautiful Swahili coastline, where you can visit historical sites, go on a dolphin safari and enjoy the white sands and warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
Day 1: Transfer to Wildebeest Eco Camp/Nairobi
On arrival at JKA International airport you’ll be picked up and taken to the Wildebeest Eco Camp. The camp is located just on the outskirts of Nairobi in Karen and is close to the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage and many other attractions such as the Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum. The camp itself has a mix of dorm style tents, luxury style en-suite tents, and also some new en-suite cottages. There is a small pool, restaurant, and game room and it’s all set in a very attractive site with lots of trees and bird-life. Spend the day sightseeing in Nairobi visiting the David Sheldrick elephant sanctuary in the morning and heading to either the Karen Blixen Museum or the Giraffe Centre in the afternoon. Alternatively you could head over to the Nairobi National Park and take a nature walk before returning to camp for dinner. Accommodation:Wildebeest Eco Camp
Day 2-3: Kilimanjaro and the Elephants of Amboseli
Depart Nairobi early morning for Amboseli (5 hours), a fantastic park that borders Tanzania, with great views of the imposing Mount Kilimanjaro and abundant wildlife including herds of elephants, big cats and bird life, it’s a park not to be missed! You’ll arrive in time for lunch at the Sentrim tented camp, which is a good value standard camp with semi-permanent heavy canvas tents erected on a tiled concrete base. Each tent has a comfy bed, an en suite shower and toilet. Meals are buffet style and vegetarians are catered for. After lunch you’ll leave camp and head into Amboseli National Park, just a ten-minute drive away. After your game drive you’ll return to camp for dinner and an evening relaxing around the fireplace. You can spend the next day exploring the park; either spend the whole day in the park with a picnic lunch or venture out for an early morning and late afternoon game drive and spend the rest of the time relaxing in camp, it’s up to you! Day 4-5: Wilderness of Tsavo
Wake up early to see the sun rise over Kilimanjaro. Then after breakfast, continue your safari on to Tsavo West, which is about a two hour drive. The drive to Tsavo is mostly through wilderness and you will pass by some interesting lava flows on the way. You’ll be staying at the stunning Serena Kilaguni Lodge situated inside the park. Serena Kilaguni is a game-viewing lodge overlooking its own watering hole that can have daily visits from elephants and many other plains mammals. You’ll arrive in time for lunch and then head out for a late afternoon game drive and visit the Mzima Springs and the hippos and Nile crocodiles. You’ll return for dinner and spend your evening relaxing and watching the wildlife arrive at the watering hole overlooked by the lodge’s restaurant, lounge, and bar. You can spend the next day taking game drives at your leisure, enjoying the lodges’ facilities or spend the entire day exploring the park with a picnic lunch. Day 6: The scenic sanctuary of Taita Hills
After breakfast you will depart Kilaguni and head for the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, an area full of wildlife. There are more than fifty species of large mammals and three hundred species of birds here, it’s not uncommon to spot two dozen species in a morning game drive, among them lions, cheetahs, large herds of elephant and buffalo! You’ll arrive in time for lunch at the Sarova Salt Lick game viewing lodge, where there is a water source which attracts a lot of wildlife, which can be viewed from the comfort of the lodge or from their very good ground-level hide. Later on you’ll be taken out by your driver for a game drive in this very scenic park before heading back to the lodge for dinner. Accommodation: Sarova Salt Lick Lodge
Day 7-8: Enter the semi-arid scrublands of Tsavo East
After breakfast you will leave Sarova Salt Lick and head out on a game drive through the sanctuary before entering Tsavo East; a plateau of open grassland with giant baobab trees where you’ll get a great feeling of being out in the wilderness. You’ll arrive in time for lunch at the Epiya Chapeyu camp situated on the Galana River, before taking an afternoon game drive and a visit to the Lugards Falls and Mudanda Rock. Epiya Chapeyu is a small family run camp that lies in the heart of Tsavo East; it has 20 en suite semi-permanent tents spread across a large area, all with views of the river and they also have great Italian food on offer! Spend the following day exploring the wilderness of Tsavo and we’ll include a visit to the Aruba dam, which is an attraction for many species of bird and mammals. Accommodation: Epiya Chapeyu
Day 9-13: Relax on the white sands and in the warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean
After breakfast you will head to Malindi, which is on a lovely stretch of the Indian Ocean coastline, with beautiful palm-lined beaches and tumbling mosques; our preferred accommodation here is Turtle Bay near the Watamu Marine Reserve, although there are plenty of alternatives available on request. Turtle Bay has a friendly atmosphere, with very good facilities and is excellent for families and couples and those looking for good value. You can spend your time here just relaxing on the beach or alternatively there are numerous activities and worthwhile excursions such as a visit to the Gedi ruins – a Swahili town inhabited from the 13th to 17th century and now deserted; bird watching at the stunning Mida Creek, renowned for its bird population and amazing sunsets; hiking at Hell’s Kitchen; dhow trips and dolphin watching; snorkelling & diving in the Watamu Marine Reserve (Turtle Bay has its own dive centre and dives are paid for locally). Day 14: Transfer to Nairobi
After breakfast you will transfer to the local airport for your flight back to Nairobi to connect with your international flight back home. This will mark the end of 14 Day African Safari.
